Extra Curriculum

Thomas Keble School offers a wide range of extracurricular activities. We firmly believe that students benefit greatly from being involved in activities beyond the academic curriculum and that this helps to develop character, promote cohesion and encourages students to consider themselves as part of the community.

We have a program of extracurricular activities that caters for a variety of interests, in sport, the arts and a range of clubs and societies. Our aim is for pupils to get involved as much as they can with these opportunities.

While opportunities vary from term to term and year to year, a flavour of recent opportunities includes clubs for drama, Airfix modelling, ukulele, keyboards, homework catch-up, card games and film club. In music we have the TK vocal group. Each year, we have a school production as well as two concerts a year that include dance, drama and music. We currently offer individual or small group lessons on flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, horn, piano, violin, guitar and drums as well as singing lessons.

Popular sports clubs have included gymnastics, football (girls and boys), netball, hockey, rounders, tennis, athletics, cross-country, cricket, table tennis, basketball, volleyball, dance, ski club, rugby, karate, fitness club, outdoor pursuits and cheerleading. Thomas Keble has a full range of sports teams for both boys and girls and we successfully compete at local, regional and national level..

A range of residential and local trips take place, catering for all students, including some specifically designed to stretch and challenge our most able students. Recent residential trips have included:

  • Activity holiday at French Château (Yr 7)
  • Paris Netball Trip.
  • European Ski trip (Year's 8 – 11) every two years
  • Football and netball tour to Spain (Year's 9 – 11) every two years
  • Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions
  • History trip to the World War 1 battlefields

Duke of Edinburgh Award

The DofE programme is an amazing opportunity that we offer at 2 levels: Bronze in Year 9 and Silver in Year 10. It is truly inclusive; it doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, there’s a DofE option for you. The Award consists of four sections: Volunteering, Skill, Physical and the Expedition. You’ll find yourself helping people and the community, getting fitter, developing or exploring new skills and going on an exciting expedition where you will be entirely self-sufficient for 2 days at Bronze or 3 days at Silver.

The best part? You choose what you do for your sections. Students complete a real kaleidoscope of activities: yoga, volunteering at donkey sanctuaries, painting, sword skills, photography, refereeing sport, teaching primary students sport, cooking, producing miniature horse tack, road cycling and many more!

Expeditions are coordinated by staff at Thomas Keble School. Bronze Award participants spend 2 days in the Cotswold's walking with an overnight camp. It gets really get exciting for Silver participants with training in the Forest of Dean and expeditions across the beautiful Black Mountains in South Wales for 3 days with 2 overnight camps.

For further information, please see Mrs Paynter for the Bronze Award, and Mr Acton for the Silver Award.

Music Tuition

At Thomas Keble School, we offer individual & small group tuition through Gloucestershire Music (GM). Instrumental lessons are a great way to not only engage your child in music making but are also proven to improve their confidence, concentration and much research has shown the positive effect of music on English and Maths in particular.

The time that lessons commence will be decided by the school and the GM tutor who will deliver the lessons. Gloucestershire Music also offers a musical instrument hire scheme.
