RE GCSE Short Course

Students who take Short Course RE GCSE will continue to have one lesson of RE a week during Y10 and complete the course started in Y9 by studying the following units of work:

  • A study of Christianity – beliefs and teachings
  • A study of Islam – beliefs and teachings

All students are encouraged to be open-minded and take a full part in group and class discussions. Listening actively and thinking critically is just as important as explaining your own ideas.  Students will often disagree with each other but must do so respectfully, giving clear reasons and evidence for their views.  Thoughtful, well informed discussion is a key part of the learning we do in Religious Education.

Assessment:

After each unit of work students complete an exam style assessment so that their progress can be tracked and targeted help provided. Students also complete a mock exam in November of their Y10 year.  All work is marked using GCSE grades.

At the end of Y10 students sit a 1-hour GCSE exam on the Philosophical and Ethical Studies element of the course (studied in Y9), a 35-minute exam on the study of Christianity unit and a 35-minute exam on the study of Islam unit.

RE GCSE Full Course

Students who opt to take RE Full Course GCSE have 5 lessons of RE a fortnight and take their final GCSE RE exams at the end of Y11 rather than the end of Y10.

The two units studied in Y9 count towards the final exam but Full Course students study two further philosophical and ethical units:

  • Issues of Good and Evil
  • Issues of Human Rights

They then complete two more units of work:

  • A study of Christianity – beliefs, teachings and practices
  • A study of Islam – beliefs, teachings and practices

Throughout Y10 and Y11 Full Course GCSE students have distinct lessons which focus on the development of thinking skills and philosophical enquiry.  We learn about philosophy by actually doing it and these lessons are a very popular element of the GCSE Full Course.

Assessment:

At the end of Y11 Full course students sit a 2-hour GCSE exam on the Philosophical and Ethical Studies element of the course (studied through Y9, 10 and 11), a 1-hour exam on the study of Christianity unit and a 1-hour exam on the study of Islam unit.

The GCSE exam syllabus requires us to study two religions only so that knowledge and understanding is detailed and has depth.  At Thomas Keble we study Christianity and Islam.  The GCSE syllabus also requires us to study atheist and humanist views.
