Modern Languages

This is a two-year course leading to GCSE. The topics in the specification are the same for both French and Spanish and cover the following areas:

The units studied are as follows:

  • Listening – Examinations – 20% This exam is assessed at Foundation or Higher level and lasts for 30 or 40 minutes respectively, with 5 minutes allowed at the beginning for reading time.
  • Reading – Examination – 20% This exam is assessed at Foundation or Higher level and lasts for 30 or 40 minutes respectively.
  • Speaking – Controlled Assessment – 30% Two tasks in the form of an interview and a conversation are recorded and marked by the teacher, then sent to AQA for moderation. Candidates have time to prepare for the assessment after the topic has been taught. They can have a prompt card and a bullet pointed list of things to include.
  • Writing – Controlled Assessment – 30% Two tasks are sent to AQA for marking. Candidates have time to prepare for the written task after the topic has been taught. The final draft would then be written up in one hour. Students can have access to a task planning form with teacher feedback, if they wish, as well as a dictionary.
