Careers education is a highly valued and important part of what we offer students at Thomas Keble School to prepare them for their future.
We are incredibly proud of the provision in curriculum, extra-curricular and information and guidance offered to each and every student.
There are eight Gatsby Benchmarks (published by the DfE for all schools and colleges) all of which are met fully by Thomas Keble. We are delighted to be one of the few schools in the county to be able to announce this.
Programme of activities
Year 7
Students in Year 7 will begin their careers education programme at Thomas Keble School by developing their occupational knowledge. They will investigate occupations within their community through a series of tutorial lessons, culminating in the ‘Guess The Job’ event, where parents/carers are invited into school and students speak to each one in small groups, asking questions to work out what their job is.
Year 8
Students in Year 8 continue their careers education within their tutorial lessons by focusing on issues such as stereotyping and opportunity theory. They will learn from labour market information about jobs which are expanding or reducing, and industries which are dominant in their local area. They will also look at budgeting using a Barclays LifeSkills board game and begin to use CareerPilot. They also have the opportunity to apply for an increased number of enrichment roles such as the after-school business club, careers ambassador and other leadership roles, and will be given guidance and support to complete applications for these positions.ion content
Year 9
Students in Year 9 will build on the work completed throughout Years 7 and 8, and begin to focus more on their own career paths. They will develop a deeper understanding of their own strengths and skills to help them with their next step of choosing their GCSE options subjects and find out more about a range of educational pathways open to them after secondary education. The school will host an options evening which students can opt to attend with their parents/carers to speak to subject leads and local post-16 providers, and they can attend a number of workshops of their choice to help with their decision-making. As with Year 8, they also have the opportunity to apply for an increased number of enrichment roles such as the after-school business club, careers ambassador and other leadership roles, and will be given guidance and support to complete applications for these positions
Year 10
Students in Year 10 begin to plan for their post-16 options choices through their tutorial lessons, work experience and encounters with education providers and local employers. They will begin by exploring the importance of completing work experience and will be supported to choose and apply for their own placement. They will also take responsibility for their own health and safety paperwork and evaluations. They will also take part in the ‘Ask the Professional’ event where they are able to prepare questions to ask a number of local employers about their work. The school will also host a Post-16 evening for Year 10 students and their parents/carers which includes a number of workshops on further education, apprenticeships and employability. Students will also experience taster days at a selection of post-16 education providers, completing lesson workshops of their choice, before going on their work experience placement.
Year 11
Students in Year 11 will use all of the knowledge developed throughout Y7-10 to choose their next steps based on their strengths, likes, LMI etc. They will be visited by a number of post-16 providers including sixth forms, colleges, UTC and apprenticeship providers to ensure they fully understand their options. They will take part in the ‘Life After TK Day’ where they will complete workshops on applying for further education, apprenticeships and CV writing. They will also complete a 1:1 mock interview with a local employer and receive feedback to help them to prepare for real interviews in the future. All students in Year 11 will have at least one 1:1 careers guidance interview with our in-school careers adviser, and some students will receive more than one depending on individual needs.

Although sixth forms predominantly offer A-Levels, many do also offer a small range of vocational qualifications to allow students to create a blended programme of study.
