The School Day

In March 2022, the Department for Education (DfE) set out details of the expectation that state-funded mainstream schools should deliver a school week of at least 32.5 hours by September 2023. The 32.5 hour minimum is the time from the official start of the school day (i.e. morning registration) to the official end to the compulsory school day (i.e. official home time). The 32.5 hour minimum includes breaks and lunch times. It does not include optional before or after school provision.

  • The 32.5-hour week is equal to 1950 minutes per week.
  • At Thomas Keble, registration starts at 08:45 and our day ends for students at 15:05.
  • This means each Thomas Keble day is 380 minutes, giving a total for the week of 1900 minutes.
  • We are therefore 50 minutes short each week, or 10 minutes per day.

To comply with the government expectation, 50 minutes will be added to our school week. This will take the form of a 10-minute extension to the school day. The current school day model is given below, followed by the model to be adopted from September 2023.
